A website is the one thing in your marketing you can actually own. Get that part wrong and every dollar you spend afterwards, on search, on ads, on vans with your name down the side, pushes people towards something that isn't really yours.
These are ten companies that build websites for home service businesses. As ever: our blog, our list, we are first. The other nine are real options described the way they describe themselves.
Settle these before you pay a deposit
- Who owns the site? If it is built on the company's own platform, leaving means starting again. Get the answer in writing.
- Can you edit it? Changing a price, a photo or your hours should take two minutes, not a support ticket.
- Is it built to rank? A beautiful site with one services page will not bring searches in.
- Is it fast on a phone? Most of your customers are on mobile data, often outdoors.
- Who writes the words? Design is the easy half. The copy is what convinces a homeowner to call you.
- What happens after launch? Updates, backups, broken forms. Ask who is watching.
1. DevignSol
{{image:devignsol}}We build websites for local service businesses, and we have done it for more than 100 businesses since 2022.
- The site is yours. WordPress, your design, your content, your domain, your hosting account. Leave whenever you want and everything keeps working.
- You can change it yourself. Prices, photos, hours, a seasonal offer, all editable in a couple of minutes, or send it to us.
- Built to rank from day one. A page for each service and each town, proper structure, and the technical side done before launch rather than sold to you later. Details on our website design page.
- Fast where it counts. We test on real phones on mobile data, because that is where your customers are.
- Written for homeowners. Plain words, real photos, click-to-call everywhere, forms short enough that people finish them.
- Looked after afterwards. Updates, backups, security and form checks on a care plan, so nothing quietly breaks.
- No long contracts, and no ads or social upsell. We do websites and search, and say so up front.
Best for: owners who want a site they own, can edit, and that was built to bring calls rather than compliments.

Do you need an agency to build a website?
No. You can build one yourself on a site builder, and for a one-van business starting out that is a reasonable first step. The trouble comes later: the builder platform owns the site, the pages are hard to grow past a handful, and the thing was never structured for search.
Hiring out makes sense when the website has to earn work rather than just exist - when you want a site you own with a page per service and town, quick on a phone, and set up so SEO and Local SEO have something to work with. Judge the quote on that, not on how many pages it includes.
The one question that separates them
"If I stop paying you next month, what happens to my website?" Ask it on every call. The answers vary more than you would expect, and the difference is years of your own investment. Ask the same about your content, your photos, your domain name and your Google Business Profile, because those can sit in an agency account too, and getting them back later is far harder than asking now.
If you want an honest read on the site you have now, and whether it needs replacing at all, get a free website and SEO review and we will tell you what we would do first.
In short
A website is the one marketing asset you keep. Judge these companies on ownership, speed on a phone, and whether you can edit your own site - then on how the rest is handled: SEO and Local SEO to be found, conversion work so the visits turn into calls, and a care plan so nothing quietly breaks. Design you admire is worth nothing if the phone stays quiet.
